What an AI comic generator actually does
At its simplest, an AI comic generator takes a script or an article and renders it as sequential panels. But the hard part isn't drawing — it's keeping the same character recognizable panel after panel. Tools that ignore this produce one-off art; tools that solve it produce a series people follow.
How a character-consistent generator works
Strong tools use a Character Sheet: a reference image of your character from multiple angles and expressions. Each new panel is generated against that reference, often with anchor-page chaining where the first panel of a sequence grounds the ones that follow.
Checklist before you choose
1) Does it keep a character consistent across panels — not just across a single prompt? 2) Can you edit the script before images are generated? 3) Do credits expire? 4) Can you export in platform ratios like 9:16 or 1:1? 5) Do you own the commercial rights on paid plans?
The trap most AI comics fall into
The most common failure is a character whose face changes between panels. If the tool has no notion of a persistent character — if you have to re-describe them every panel — you'll spend your credits fighting consistency instead of making comics.
